Students from Floating Garden Poland in the finals of the global competition The Trail / VINCI Construction

On April 18, two student teams competed in Warbud's office for participation in the Paris final of the global competition VINCI Construction "The Trail - Imagine the construction industry of the future". The winning project was elaborated by the Floating Garden Poland team from the West Pomeranian University of Technology (ZUT). The team is made of the following members: architect engineer Andrzej Chuchra, engineer Daniel Felczak, engineer Krzysztof Wojciechowski and engineer Szymon Żabkiewicz. In a month in Paris they will face 13 best engineering teams from all around the world.

Students from ZUT presented the concept of a self-sufficient house on water built from waste marine containers obtained from the local seaport. In the design of their house equipped with systems for obtaining energy from the surroundings, they used photovoltaic panels, water and wind turbines as well as an ecological wastewater treatment plant. The young engineers used water-to-water heat pumps (an innovative solution patented by Prof. Bogusław Zakrzewski, PhD, Eng. and  Wojciech Tuchowski, PhD, Eng. - employees of ZUT in Szczecin).

Another project qualified to the regional finals of the competition was prepared by the BIMgo team from Warsaw University of Technology. The team was made of Weronika Kowal, Aleksandra Puczyłowska, Krzysztof Kaczor and Michał Nowakowski. WUT students presented an application that manages the habits of housing estate residents in order to optimize energy use. According to the originators, this type of data can significantly affect financial and energy savings.

Both projects were very original. They perfectly fit into the future-oriented, innovative and, what is important, ecological vision of creating cities (including their management). It was not easy to choose a winner. The Competition jury consisting of:

  • Professor Maria Kaszyńska from the West Pomeranian University of Technology,
  • Professor Andrzej Garbacz from Warsaw University of Technology,
  • Jerzy Werle, Warbud's Chairman and CEO,
  • Waldemar Piwek, production director at the Specialist Construction Division and head of the Innovation Support Team,
  • and Jacek Boruc, Deputy Director in the Technical Office

appreciated the simplicity, the use of state-of-the-art technologies, innovation and the actual possibility of applying the concept and chose the Floating Garden Poland team as a laureate and their project of a self-sufficient floating house. We keep our fingers crossed and hope for their success in France!

After the awards ceremony, young engineers from both teams, accompanied by Ms Małgorzata Kowalczyk, Head of the Human Resource Management Department responsible for the organization of the "The Trail" competition, visited the headquarters of our company.
