| Help to the victims of the exhibition hall collapse in Silesia
We did not remain indifferent to the fate of the victims of the most dramatic building collapse in Poland’s history which took place on January 28, 2006 in the area of Katowice International Fairs. At 17:15 hours, during a homing pigeon exhbition, the hall roof collapsed. At the time of the catastrophe there were more than 700 people inside the building – guests and exhibitors. As a result of the roof collapse 65 people died and more than 170 were injured. The rescue operation was carried out by 103 fire-fighting teams (more than 1300 persons), 230 policemen with dogs, military police and the Volunteer Mountain Rescue Service (GOPR), as well as by rescuers from the Central Mining Rescue Station. Poland’s President announced national mourning which lasted until February 1 and decided to use special funds from his office budget to help the families of the dead and the injured. Caritas Polska collected money and goods which were distributed among the affected persons. We also made our contribution as a sign of solidarity with the victims. |
